Colonial Square sees residents already moving in to development

By EVAN WHITE

UTICA - Local leaders stress the importance of economic development, and a continuing project in North Utica known as Colonial Square is part of that development.

Ground was broken in Spring of last year and within a few months its expected to be finished. Nearly a dozen people have moved into Schuyler Commons, with others signed up to lease apartments in the near future.

Local officials cite economic development projects like this one as a way to help re-build the local economy. City and county officials consider projects like these important investments in the community.

A spokesperson says the apartments began as senior housing, but during later phases there will be space for people of any age. Managers say the project is in a good place for people who want to be near, but not in the downtown area.

"It is very accessible," said Mary Kathryn Maine, leasing manager for Colonial Square. "We did have the mayor and other local officials who are fully behind the whole project and what we are offering this community. Many of them, North Utica people have been coming in and have found that this is what they are looking for. They want to stay in the north Utica area."

The first phase of the project is expected to be finished sometime towards the end of Spring. Colonial Apartments is currently in discussions to begin other phases of the project including single family homes and townhouses.

Price is way too high! $100 extra a month for garage-WHY? Once you contact them, they NEVER stop calling you-let us get in contact with you when ready.

I though they were expensive too, until I learned of all the amenities. Heat and hotwater are included and the Clubhouse is fabulous. My husband and I are planning on selling our house in the spring and I think Colonial may be the way to go.

The apartments look beautiful but they are out of our price range. We need more affordable housing for seniors. IS ANYONE LISTENING.

I have family members who will be moving in shortly. Beautifully done. Exciting new development for those of us who want our elderly to stay close by.

I was very interested in these apartments until I found out the amount of the rent. I am single and the rent was over my price range. Most seniors in this area cannot afford such a large amount. I was very disappointed as this would have been the perfect solution for me to sell my home and move into an apartment that is in a safe part of the city. If the rent was just a few hundred dollars cheaper, I believe more seniors would be interested. This area needs more affordable housing for seniors!

We took a tour of Colonial Square last weekend. It was lovely! The staff really took an interest in our needs and they displayed a positive connection with the community. Kudos to them for coming to Utica!

How does building new housing using out of town contractors improve out economic development? Don't we need to bring in new employment opportunities before we build housing? I don't think the saying "if you build it they will come" meant companies will move to Utica because we have an influx of empty vacant properties. All I see were creating a bigger problem. Now those housing that these people leave to move will remain vacant and we sure have plenty of them already through out the city.
