Large purchases of methamphetamine ingredients leads to several arrests

By EVAN WHITE

UTICA - Officials from the U.S. Attorney's Office announced the arrests of seven individuals from Central New York who may have manufactured their own methamphetamine - an illegal substance.

The individuals arrested are not accused of creating methamphetamine, but purchasing an over-the-counter product called "ephedrine" which is a substance used in meth production.

Buying more than nine grams of ephedrine in a 30 day period is a violation of a law enacted in 2006 designed to help stop meth production nationwide.

Ephedrine is found in cough, cold and allergy products, and drug stores keep log books of people who buy them.

Here are the names of those charged:

*Carolyn Atkyns of West Winfield

*Trevor Horton of West Winfield

*Terry Merrick of West Winfield

*Robert Birmingham also of West Winfield

*Lisa Merwin of Sauquoit

*Jeffery Kupris of Sauquoit

*Pamela Vannort of Oriskany Falls

U.S. Attorneys involved say meth production won't be tolerated.

"We have had methamphetamine crop up in different parts of our state and we committed to doing our best to in conjunction with the law enforcement agencies to make sure that that doesn't become a reality in the Mohawk Valley," said John Katko of the U.S. Attorney's Office.

The products were purchased at various drug stores in Utica, Yorkville, Waterville, Clinton, Whitesboro, Ilion, Little Falls, and Richfield Springs.

Again, none of those we mentioned are charged with making methamphetamine, they have all been released pending further charges.

Photos of the female suspects in the case were not released by authorities to the media.

Why didn't they investigate longer & find the lab & close it down. If they were buying it for meth production, follow the trail to the lab & finish the job. These labs are dangerous, exposive, and put the communtiy in dangerm beyond the obvious drug abuse problems. I just wish they would have found it & shut another one down.

Here's my take on the whole photo thing. Women actually have families to provide medical care for. Possibly multiple children, parents, etc... the law enforcement officials know who's using these products appropriately and who's not. The ladies had to be arrested because of the law and if they weren't, the attorneys for these guys could have used that as a hole in the case. It's time for these names to stop showing up in the media!!

1. many people's photo's are posted on-line and put on the news before conviction and everyone has a family which will be hurt by it 2. female's pictures should be shown 3. if you take the drug as prescribed on the box, you would not need to buy over the legal limit in 30 days 4. less than 3 months ago some of these people were indicated in a drug investigation... coincidence? I bet not! 5. the police did a great job, keep up the good work, perhaps then the meth epidemic can be minimalized.
