County Executive vetoes pay raise for Oneida County Sheriff

By PAT BAILEY

UTICA - Wednesday night Sheriff Dan Middaugh was given a $20,000 raise from the Oneida County Board of Legislators.

Thursday, Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente vetoed the resolution, saying the raise would not be fair to the public.

In the letter sent to the County Board of Legislators, County Executive Anthony Picente says "I recognize the position of Oneida County Sheriff needs to be upgraded in terms of salary."

However, Picente feels now is not the time for that to happen.

Middaugh makes $67,674 to be Oneida County Sheriff, which is of course an elected position. Picente says he opposes the increasing of salaries of elected officials during their term of office.

Picente says when candidates seek elective office they know what their salary would be. The County Executive says the points raised for giving the sheriff a raise are all valid, but the action taken by the board was the wrong way to do it.

Despite todays veto, Sheriff Middaugh says he will continue his work as Oneida County Sheriff.

"I'm certainly not going to give my job up," Middaugh said. "I'll just go on. Again, I think I have justified, and I would be happy to justify to any tax payer that would like to talk personally with me regarding the office, and the responsibility and the duties of the office."

The clerk of the board - Susan Crabtree - says the veto means the same resolution, for a $20,000 raise, will now go back to the Board of Legislators at their next meeting.

At that point the resolution will need a two thirds "yes" vote to override the the veto, and for middaugh to get his raise.

According to the clerk this is the first executive veto she has seen in her 20 plus years serving the board.

The next scheduled full board meeting is April 16.

Okay 'Know it all', tell me how do you calculate your budged.... do you just go out and splurge, or you calculate your income against your expenses, if you try it (sometime in the future), it will open your eyes to the situation on someone getting a almost 1/3 pay increase.... and thanks to Oneida County Executive (who actually used calculations) for doing a good job....

I think the county can afford the raise since 1% of the county budget goes to the Sheriff's Office. Maybe we should cut your job as state and local tax analizer and save money that way. Good thing the deputies work for nothing, because then there would be no real law enforcement in the area.

Anyone that thinks this raise is fair and compares the Sheriffs pay rate with other departments elsewhere should take their blinders off and wake up. This is central NY,we are paying over 8% in county sales tax, soon to be $4.00 a gallon for gas and no real high paying jobs to keep people in this area.If things dont change, we around here, we wont need a Sheriff because this place will be a ghost town. Kudo's to Mr. Picente and to Mr. Tanoury for looking out for our interest.

Yes S. Kahl, you are right, about statistics anyway, however did you take in consideration the following: New York taxpayers have the highest combined State and local tax burden in the nation, with a total tax bill of $131 for every $1,000 of personal income in 2002, nearly 26 percent higher than the national average, these statistics calculated with highest in Oneida County

Good. its elected, if he didn't like the pay, don't run for office. Not to mention he broke the law when he crashed that county car when campaigning. He should be in jail instead of being rewarded.

Do some homework and you will find that even with a $20,000 raise he is still below other Sheriff's and Police Chiefs in the Central New York area with comparable staffing. The fact is Oneida County pays all departments less then any other comparable county. I understand people don't want to hear about a $20,000 raise, but it is time for Oneida County to catch up to the times. 24 elected County Legislators believe it is time.

S. Kahl, I don't think that $20,000.00 pay increase is fair..., Sheriff is elected position, he can leave any time he wants, if he feels that he should be paid more

Mr. Picente, congratulations on your act of courage in vetoing the pay raise for the sheriff. As you stated, elected officials know what the positions they are running for pay at the time they are seeking the office. Too often our local officials have taken the “back door” approach by voting for increases immediately following the elections thinking that their constituencies will forget their actions by the time the next election rolls around. Thank you for breaking that cycle in Oneida County

Let's talk about fair? On my job I only make about 25,000 dollars a year that is with overtime. Plus I don't get a car or all my gas paid. I am not saying the sheriff does not need a raise but 20,000 dollars is to much. He knew how much he was going to make when he ran for offic. I f they want to do a raise it should not come into effect till the next election and not that much.

Once again the County Executive feels the Sheriff's Office does not deserve fair wages. Take a look at this web site and learn more about how the County Executive's Office has held back the fair wages of the Sheriff's Office. WWW.OCPBA.ORG
