Veteran News Reporter and UC Professor still does what he teaches

UTICA - Experience is what can make a good professor a great one. That is the case for a journalism professor at Utica College who still does what he teaches in his classroom.

That professor is David Chanatry. He teaches Broadcast Journalism Writing at UC. But he's also a veteran news reporter who still enjoys traveling the world to do what he's instructing his students to eventually do one day.

His recent trip was to Albania and Kosovo. As you know, Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia a little more than a month ago.

Protests quickly erupted throughout most of the region - mostly by the country's small, but vocal, population of Serbs.

Chanatry says he traveled to a Serbian enclave to speak to residents who are upset with the change.He reported on the more peaceful Serbian protests near Kosovo's capital of Pristina.

Chanatry says the Serbs he spoke with, while unhappy with what has happened, have no plans to vacate the place they call home.

"We're not going to leave," Chanatry said. "And there's a lot of influence being placed on them that the Serbian government to stay to say this is sort of our stake...our place...and if we leave the other guys win we're going to stay."

Chanatry says he has no immediate plans to go back to Kosovo, but he's not ruling it out.
