NYS Thruway tolls could increase, Authority to vote

Andrew Donovan

The New York State Thruway Authority will soon be voting to raise the cost of tolls on the 320 mile stretch of road, possibly making the commute to work, for some, that much more expensive.

For those in the Utica area who travel to Syracuse to work each day, the cost is already adding up. To the first exit, 34A, the 43 mile trip costs $1.90 and $3.80 round trip, in one week that's a 430 mile trip that cost $19.

Over the course of a month, the 1700 mile trip cost $76 dollars in tolls. Do not forget, gas is averaging $3.40 a gallon. Those from Herkimer County that commute to Albany everyday, are getting hit even harder. A one way trip is over 70 miles and cost a little more than $3. In one week, commuters are shelling out $31 for the 719 mile trip and in one month, your putting on over 28 hundred miles and paying $124 in tolls.

According to the New York State Thruway authorities website, the toll increase for most small cars will be anyway from 15 to 25 cents and for bigger vehicles like, 18 wheelers, the increase could be as high as 90 cents.

I already can't afford Gas, now the tolls? wow. I think I may have to turn down the job offer I rec'd in Syracuse. Unless I can get some type of reimbursment. NYS is going crazy.

I am so glad I moved out of NY state...what a joke it is becoming up there. That road has been paid for and they just keep raking everyone over the coals by increasing prices. I think we need to get those people out of office because they are doing now favors for NY residents.

This is ridiculous because there is no reason to increase tolls again. The construction doesn't even keep up with the increase in tolls so why even bother? Pretty soon keep raising them people will find alternate routes and wont care about the thruway anymore. Then what would the government do then? Can't force people to use it. There are alternate routes to take it might take a little longer but I use them. I try to avoid using thruway all together.

With the cost of fuel, cost of tolls and strict DOT it makes it hard to get items trucked into and out of our wonderful state. Nice to see the government HELPING us so, why not step in and put a base price that is fair to farmers on whole milk (like $20 or $22 per hundred)

What happened to the original plan that the thruway would become a toll free road after so many years (believe it was 20yrs.)
