Rising gas prices lead to more "drive-off" crimes at gas stations

By EVAN WHITE

ROME - A Rome Sunoco is blaming the city's Police Department for several recent unresolved "drive-offs."

While numbers countywide are similar to figures from recent years, some say the cost is adding up as the price for gasoline goes-up.

Incident's like this one that took place in Whitestown nearly 2 years ago have happened 6 times in the past two months at this Sunoco in Rome.

"Someone constantly has to be at the window to watch," said James Russel, gas station manager at the Rome Sunoco.

On Saturday, the driver of this car allegedly left without paying and like others was caught by a surveillance camera. According to managers, incidents like this cost the gas station about $600 per year, and lately they say the police have done little to help catch gas thieves.

"Sometimes when we have drive-offs, the officers come here, they run the car and they go right to the house where it's coming up and they come back and pay, but the thing is, some don't get addressed the way they should get addressed," Russel said.

Rome Public Safety Commissioner Jim Masucci says there are a lot of factors that gas stations don't always take into account.

"Sometimes it's somebody else's car, somebody is driving somebody else's car, somebody else driving someone else's car, that would be hard to make an arrest," Masucci said.

A lot of gas stations require that customers pre-pay, but managers here say their parent company will not allow it - seeing the pre-pay system as an inconvenience.

Masucci feels that could help deter some theft, but police need to follow up on each incident.

"If it happens, they should go back to gas stations to tell them we can't get anywhere with this because you either gave us the wrong plate number, the plate's were switched or the wrong address is coming up on the plate," Masucci said.

As we get closer to the summer driving season, and drive-offs become more prevalent, managers are concerned that they will lose even more money in the coming months.

everyone think the price of gasoline is high, try heating your house with Propane. We live away from the city, and propane is our only option. We use approx. 400 gallons a month, at $3.50 per gallon, try adding that to your fuel bill! Makes filling your car for 150.00 a bit nicer, doesn't it!

The system made some serious mistakes back in the 50's when the RR went out. The O&W for example served as a very vital source of transportation and freight hauling from Canada to the Pa. line. Alot of small communities were connected by the RR. present day we depend on the truck and car, wake up government, help the working man and woman.

Really drive-offs are going to be the least of the worries if things don't change and soon. Everyone will be out for themselves soon because we really will have no other choice. Oh and as for our leaders..they have been excellent role-models...I believe it will go back to the famous Robin Hood story..Steal from the rich give to the poor..cause most of us are already!! And not by our doing I might add.

tax added to gas in ny is one of the highest it is somewhere between 60-70 cents a gallon not a few cents. if the tax was taken away my self as a example would save about 300.00 a week since we use about 400-450 gallons a week.

Broke it would be to easy to have them actually doing anything for us. Why would they care, most of the time we pay for their gas anyway. So why would they want to do anything for us to lower it? They would say who cares and move on to sitting there doing nothing. Gas will never be the same again after the idioit in the oval office leaves. The next president will have their hands full trying to figure out just what the idiot in office did to make them so high. Oh I forgot, he owns them.

that doesn't make it right to steal gas - and removing the gas tax will only take a couple cents off per gallon. these theives are just loosers that will chance it and pay the money if they get caught

knowing that drive offs are an issue, i think that for the company to not do prepay, it is there own choice. With that choice is more drive offs. Why? Because people can. I feel it is not the RPD, it is up to the business owner, to assist in resolving this issue. IF a crime has been committed then the RPD should have a hand in this. But, we have had recent stabbings, Muggings, assults, i think the RPD has it's hands full. Sunoco, you need to also help yourself! HEllo

Actually, the police do not ever have to react/act, except in cases of violence or destruction of property. If someone is injured because they expected but did not receive police protection, they cannot recover damages by suing. It is, therefore, a fact of law and of practical necessity that individuals are responsible for their own personal safety, and that of their loved ones. Police protection must be recognized for what it is: only an auxiliary general deterrent.

the gas station is basically given the choice to let the person pay the money once they are caught or they can prosecute them which would take longer in a court of law and they'd probably end up loosing $$ in the end. you can't have it both ways - perhaps the plates have even been changed by the time they are caught - loosers do that kind of stuff hoping they won't get caught
