Teen accused of grandfather's murder pleads insanity

By JOLEEN FERRIS

UTICA - The Clinton teen accused of his grandfather's murder entered a plea, but he will not be going to prison - instead to a psychiatric facility.

Kevin Adams entered a plea Thursday of "not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect" in the death of his grandfather, Edward Bogan.

Prosecutors said there is evidence that Adams was on the verge of a nervous breakdown or psychotic episode the night before the murder. Several doctors have diagnosed him as paranoid schizophrenic.

Through tears today, Adams gave the court insight into the delusions that lead him to kill his grandfather.

"During that time, I thought I was Jesus and decided that if i killed my grandfather, I would be imprisoned and therefore would be unable to be crucified," Adams said today in court.

Kevin Adams will remain in a psychiatric facility until the judge determines, based on doctor's assessments, that he's not a danger to himself or anyone else.

I think that he should be put in jial because the law clearly states that the use of a controlled susbstance cannot be used as an excuse for a crime

Like so many others, I was very suspicious of anyone claiming anything "mental" when a crime was involved. That was until Kevin, a sweet, gentle, kind, smiling young man who was very comfortable in his own skin. He is opposite of aggressive. We experienced his change, a darkness descending upon him and enveloping his very being. Looking back on this great, loveable kid we couldn't wait to see, the change was taking over - we did not understand it for it not a cut, or broken bone- it was mental.

TO all of you who do NOT have a serious mental illness, you have no idea what it is like to live with one. It is a daily struggle. I am so sorry for this family and so glad you are so supportive of Kevin. I am sorry for your lost. I know what it is like to be living with a serious mental illness and it is not easy at all.

This was a truly tragic event and no one has the right to pass any negative judgement about Kevin. His actions were the result of a mental illness, and everyone's heart should go out to his family. Prayers.

I think this comment be removed from this website! I know that to some of you this story seems far fetched, but the reality is that you are sane and Kevin Adams has a mental illness. No one has the right to judge Kevin's actions. I hope that he gets the help he needs. I am very offended by the comments on this website! I know Kevin very well and I hope none of you have to ever experience what him and his family have gone through in the past 3 months!

There are many ignorant people out there - please ignore them. They obviously have not had to live with the pain of what a mental illness can do to a family. Please know that most people feel only sadness for your entire family.

To Kevins sister. I am very sorry for the loss created in your family. Both through the death of your grandfather and the illness of your brother. Take care of yourself. Things will get better. Know that I, feel for the pain that your family is going through and hope that from this point forward everyone will leave your family alone and let you all deal with things on your own terms. Good luck to you and your family and I'm sorry that you have all had to go throught this mess.

Stephen, there is no trial none of his family are charges against Kevin...It was a horrible tragic accident and unfortunatly it happend to a smart, sweet young man who has lost himself to mental illness. it is sad to me that so many judge and jump to conclusions about situations when you dont know the facts. It must be sad to be so ignorant :)

You all obviously do not understand what has happened to my little brother, do you think he is happy about this? Do you think we are happy about this? It was MY grandfather ok... it was kevin's grandfather, Kevin loved him and he loved Kevin. Yes, Kevin is going to a hospital because that is where he belongs, he is not a killer, he is mentally ill, he doesnt belong in prison. So if you dont know Kevin and you dont know our family then you dont know anything so dont say anything.

Insanity, way to easy now days. If this country was more of an eye for an eye, there would be a lot less crimes. Now us tax payers will pay for the so-called sicko to sit at a hospital!

Again, This story is not written very well. He pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect and he is not going to jail? How does that work in our justice system? Doesn't he still have to stand trial at some point so his lawyer can prove he is not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect? I think you may have left some information out of this story. Your story clearly implies that he pleaded not guilty and is walking free. I'm sure he will end up in a state hospital.
