According to the Oneida County Sheriff's Department, 17 year old Matthew Baker of Westernville, has been arrested for his role in a fight that took place on April 4th in a hallway of the Holland Patent High School.

Sheriff officials say the victim, whose name is not being released at this time, suffered a fractured eye, crushed nasal cavity and a shattered cheekbone. The student underwent surgery at St. Luke's Hospital.

Baker was arraigned in New York Mills court, and remains at the Oneida County Correctional Facility with $15,000 bail.

Why does everyone blame the government for everything?? Parents like this are not doing their children justice by demonstrating a lack of accountability for their own actions and blaming all that is wrong in the world on the government. If the parents set a good example, set boundaries and actually discipline the children will be better off. The schools also need to be tougher. The sad reality is we live in a time when fear of litigation overrides good judgement!

Hey listen all the schools have problems. They aren't going to report it for they have a reputation to uphold, and it all stems down from the top. GOVERNMENT. The gov. cut $$ to the Schools so the Schools cut corners to save $$. Wake up people it's everywhere.

The accused is from the North Western not the Village of Westernville) which has always been in the HP district. Anyone who could have the opportunity to be in the school as I have been recently would be shocked. The way that a majority of the kids behave is appalling. Parents would be (I hope) mortified at how their "pride and joy" is treating the teachers and students. The kids have zero respect! Parents need to step up to the plate and start disciplining! It did not hurt us one bit!

The accused is from Westernville? Isn't Westernville in the Rome district? What was he doing in Holland Patent to begin with if not looking for a fight?

Well, i've been reading all the comments. Some are just horrible. A human being was seriously injured by one or more other students. Kids don't have consequences for their behavior at home, so they think its ok to do as they please whenever. So, to make nasty comments towards an injured boy or his family just shows the type of people that send their kids to HP. And is probably why things like this are happening over and over. It starts at home and its respect!!! Have some for Josh and his family

Regarding comments to news articles. You are right, Michael Mishalanie is not Josh's stepfather. Mike has been a father figure to Josh and his brother for the past ten years. He has taught them to be better people and loved them as his own. Just because you donate DNA does not make you a father. Mike has earned the right to the title of their dad by standing by them. We should know because we are Josh's grandparents.

WHAT LED TO THE FIGHT? ITS NOT THE FIRST NOR THE LAST TIME SOMEONE GOT THEIR BEHIND KICKED IN SCHOOL. ITS NOT RIGHT, BUT DID THE "VICTIM" PROVOKE THE FIGHT? SEEMS THE ASSASIN DOESN'T HAVE A MARK ON HIM SO I DOUBT HE JUST WALKED UP AND PUMMELED THE VICTIM FOR NO REASON... IT TAKES 2 TO TANGO, I THINK BOTH PARTIES DESERVE DISCIPLINARY ACTION. HAVE TO SHOW THE KIDS THAT IT IS ZERO TOLERANCE, SO THE NEXT TIEM SOMEONE PICKS A FIGHT, THEY WILL HAVE TO THINK ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES, GUILTY OR NOT

HP was a great school when I went, yeah there were fights ( just like in any other school), but still back then it was nothing for our parents to put their foot in our butt's. Today you have parent's complaining that the school shouldn't be the ones in charge, and you have the Gov. saying that a "spanking" is abuse, so this is what it leads up to. Parents need to be involved more, and the school needs to open their eye's up and say enough is enough NO TOLERENCE!

I attend HP and overall the school is a relatively good place to attend. I'm not saying it has its issues, because it does but HP is probably a lot safer then the other schools around. The school can only try to prevent so much. Maybe you should all stop attacking the school and place the blame on the individuals, where it belongs.

Our children went to HP a few years ago. Things got covered up then, and continue to be covered up now. Stop being concerned with pretty buildings and new stadiums and start waking up to the fact that you have major issues. Your school has been in the news quite often lately and not for anything good. WAKE UP ADMINISTRATION AND SCHOOL BOARD. ITS TIME TO DO SOMETHING.

I can remember when people would want to buy a home in the H.P. School District just so their children can attend that school. Well over the past few years I don't think people feel the same way. I don't want to hear that these kids that are a problem come from broken homes. Because you have single parent children that go to the school who are honor students and have respect that is so lacking from so many children today not only for parents but for teachers and law enforcement officials.

Ok Holland Patent School District - time to open your eyes and face the issues that are ocurring at the schools. Enough is enough. What is it going to take for someone to die or a parent that cant take anymore storm the school and hurt someone? These are things that should be taking into consideration.

HP has and always will cover up anything that they can at the schools. In the fall some of their football players were caught with dope and they still played in the sectional game. There have been other arrests at the school for drugs and you never see that in the paper. There have been other assaults at the school where injuries have occurred, but you don't see it in the paper. They also do not report any thing to the state like they are supposed to.

Let me start by saying that the H.P school district has there eyes closed to alot of things! Just within the last 6 months there were issues with the gun that was fired on the bus, then stolen property from another student, parents unruley at sporting events, and now a assault. What else could possibly happen before the school admin. does something.!!!!!!!!

THis needed to be brought to light immediatly to protect the children. My heart goes out the family. They are a nice and decent family.
