New public safety center dedicated to Officer Thomas Lindsey

UTICA - A new public safety center will soon be opening on James Street in Utica. A run-down building will no longer be known as the James Street luncheonette. In about eight weeks it will be the Thomas Lindsey Public Safety Center.

"This center will mark a new era for public safety and the City of Utica," said Mayor David Roefaro.

City officials want to bring more police officers and firefighters into the Cornhill Community. They also want to give the residents a place to socialize.

"I got a couple pool tables donated we plan to put a basketball court next door," said Public Safety Commissioner Daniel LaBella.

"I think a lot of people will get more into it," said Kyle King, who lives near James Street. "And just because it's right here and there's not many places."

A lot of work has to be done before the center can open. That includes a new roof, completely gutting the interior and new plumbing and electrical systems.

Once it's complete, the new center will serve as a constant reminder of the sacrifices made by fallen Officer Thomas Lindsey.

"What the City of Utica is doing for Tommy is amazing," said Carmella Schisler-Lindsey, the late officer's mother. "Tommy is watching over us all. He was very proud of what Utica has done."
