New public safety center dedicated to Officer Thomas Lindsey

By MEGAN KOSKOVICH

UTICA - A new public safety center will soon be opening on James Street in Utica. A run-down building will no longer be known as the James Street luncheonette. In about eight weeks it will be the Thomas Lindsey Public Safety Center.

"This center will mark a new era for public safety and the City of Utica," said Mayor David Roefaro.

City officials want to bring more police officers and firefighters into the Cornhill Community. They also want to give the residents a place to socialize.

"I got a couple pool tables donated we plan to put a basketball court next door," said Public Safety Commissioner Daniel LaBella.

"I think a lot of people will get more into it," said Kyle King, who lives near James Street. "And just because it's right here and there's not many places."

A lot of work has to be done before the center can open. That includes a new roof, completely gutting the interior and new plumbing and electrical systems.

Once it's complete, the new center will serve as a constant reminder of the sacrifices made by fallen Officer Thomas Lindsey.

"What the City of Utica is doing for Tommy is amazing," said Carmella Schisler-Lindsey, the late officer's mother. "Tommy is watching over us all. He was very proud of what Utica has done."

this is a nice remembrance for this officer and that is a good thing. I would like to know if previous officers have been similarly remembered? Bill Chapman died many years ago in a car accident responding to a call. His name was put on the street on the side of the police station as Bill Chapman Drive. It has since been removed and redone. There is no current mention of his memory. How about William Chapman memorial walkway? What about the other officers who gave their lives? Pleasedon't forget

I'm very glad to hear something positive about cornhill. These kids really need some type of redirection and I believe that this is a great start. I wish there were things like this before because a lot of souls would probably have been save. **THE KIDS ARE OUR FUTURE**

I don't know how much a basketball court will help considering there is quite a few in Cornhill and those courts seem to be the center of trouble and criminal activity. Although if they all use this new court at least some of the playgrounds will be safe for the smaller children and their parents.

Officer Lindsey's sacrifice should never be forgotten. It is shameful, however, to see how much the city's public safety organizations have run amuck. A fire academy stands tribute to a broke city high on tax and spend; a city ambulance service stands tribute to government putting private employers out of business; and the conversion of the Mr. James Beauty Salon stands tribute to ill focused priorities -- stop nepotism, hire diversity, and you won't need a refurbished police pool hall.

Finally someone came up with an ideal that just might work for the young men and women of cornhill. I believe that if more people take time out with these young people they will make better choices in life. They need positive role models. I moved from a bigger city and they had things like midnight basketball leagues and it did help some. Thank you for looking out for our kids. That's all they need is a little love and understanding!!!!!!Good Luck
