Schuyler site approved for Herkimer County Jail site

By PAT BAILEY

SCHUYLER - Officials in Herkimer County say the Schuyler business park has been approved by state officials as a possible site for the future county jail.

Last week, officials from the State Commission of Corrections came to the business park to tour the site.

On Tuesday, at their regularly scheduled meeting, they approved that land. County Legislator Len Hendrix says the county has their own study underway to determine if the sewer and water supply is viable.

Hendrix says the full legislature could vote on the site as early as their next meeting, but more likely will wait until their next regularly scheduled meeting next month.

how would i feel about a jail in my back yard. Funny you should ask. JUST FINE THANKS BRING IT ON! AS for the business park oh thats a better sulution have it next to schools and childrens ball fields, come on people should we think about rte 28 NEIGHBORS or should we think about our children. and as for a smaller jail how about bigger one and bring in MORE money for the county and more jobs. I think you rte 28 people need to get all the facts before your cry about your property value

We dont need a bigger jail and we dont need a jail in Schuyler, what we do need is the Legislatures to do there job that we voted them to do and act now on a site in Herkimer that we can put a smaller jail up and also need the judges to start sentencing inmates faster to get them out of our hands. Its costing us tax payers to much now.

It's easy for those of you not living near the Route 28 site to criticize. How would you you feel if a county jail was built in your backyard? What would happen to the value of your home? A business park location makes much more sense for the location of a jail. Have a little understanding for your fellow County residents who value their homes.

HERKIMER COUNTY RESIDENTS SHOULD STOP WHINING ABOUT WHERE OR HOW MUCH A NEW JAIL WILL COST. YOUR JAIL IS HOUSING OUT MANY INMATES TO OTHER COUNTIES AND GENERATING THEM ALOT OF REVENUE. JUST WAIT TIL NEXT YEAR AND WATCH YOUR TAX RATE SKYROCKET. IF YOUR COUNTY IS SMART, ( WHICH I DONT BELIEVE) THEY WILL BUILD A LARGE JAIL AND BOARD INMATES IN TO HELP PAY FOR IT. ALSO IT COULD PROVIDE JOBS THAT HERKIMER COUNTY COULD USE. ( OH I FORGOT THERE IS A ALOT OF JOB OPENINGS ALL OVER HERKIMER COUNTY.)

Not only the added cost for the employees, but added cost to us (the taxpayers) to transport prisoners from law enforcement agencies to the jail and from the court to the jail. Not very smart, Herkimer County, not very smart.

you know people need to wake up this site is going to cost us even more now. those of you who oppose the rt28 site need to shut up and allow it to happen Why cant we think about those who WORK at the jail They already get paid squat and now you want them to travel even farther to work. But then again look at the overtime they will be paying for farther transports. I'll take a new pair of shoes or five

And to think it only took TEN YEARS to approve land. How long until it actually gets built?
