Vietnam War vet reunited with his lost medals

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - While Veterans Day is not until Sunday, November 11, one local veteran was honored on Friday with the return of some well-earned medals.

Everett Colp Jr is a 67 year old veteran of the Vietnam War who had received numerous medals that were lost in a hose fire.

The Marine Corps veteran in New York Mills was reunited with his medals on Friday, though, when Congressman Richard Hanna presented Colp with the medals he had earned. Those medals were a Purple Heart, a Combat Action Ribbon, a Good Conduct medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and a Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

"The first time when I received them, I was very proud of them and when I lost them, it was like they took part of me away from me," Colp Jr.

Colp says it was a lengthy process to get the Department of Defense to verify his medals, but he is thrilled to have them back just in time for Veterans Day.

The ceremony took place at the Parkway Senior Center int he City of Utica.
