UTICA - Local school's are getting involved in the green trend Tuesday. Saint Peter's School in North Utica, is in the midst of a schoolwide effort to celebrate Earth Day.

Students began the day showing some colorful opinions of what "going green" means to them. After that, they gathered tools, and removed leaves and litter from the school's garden.

Other students picked up paper with plans to recycle what they find. Principal Judith Hauck says the idea of protecting the environment is nothing new, but Earth Day can provide a special lesson.

"The important thing today is to let them know that it is not just us that talk about it," Hauck said. "It's a world wide event. It's important for all of us as a community to help the earth and leave it better than what we had for the next generation."

Hauck went on to say that students will learn more in the coming weeks about what needs to be done in and outside of the classroom to protect the environment.
