The man known as "His Holiness" to Buddhists spoke before 5,000 people Tuesday afternoon, with his main message being about peace. However, not everyone on the campus came in support of the Dalai Lama’s leadership

About 100 protesters waited outside where the Dalai Lama gave his speech. They held signs that read, "Give religious freedom" and "Stop lying". They sent a message to "His Holiness" that they want the freedom to practise a particular form of Buddhism that they say has been discriminated against by the Dalai Lama.

Inside the field house, the Dalai Lama was met with a much warmer welcome, from 5,000 people who each had their own reasons for coming.

Before getting to in depth, the Dalai Lama took time to give symbols of peace to the hosts at Colgate. Then he sat down and spoke about the tensions in Tibet and the war overseas.

He urged those in attendance to be open minded and compassionate during times of conflict.

The Dalai Lama spoke for about an hour before fielding a few questions, his total trip to Colgate only lasted about 2 hours.
