Dalai Lama concludes his visit to Colgate University

Pat Bailey

The man known as "His Holiness" to Buddhists spoke before 5,000 people Tuesday afternoon, with his main message being about peace. However, not everyone on the campus came in support of the Dalai Lama’s leadership

About 100 protesters waited outside where the Dalai Lama gave his speech. They held signs that read, "Give religious freedom" and "Stop lying". They sent a message to "His Holiness" that they want the freedom to practise a particular form of Buddhism that they say has been discriminated against by the Dalai Lama.

Inside the field house, the Dalai Lama was met with a much warmer welcome, from 5,000 people who each had their own reasons for coming.

Before getting to in depth, the Dalai Lama took time to give symbols of peace to the hosts at Colgate. Then he sat down and spoke about the tensions in Tibet and the war overseas.

He urged those in attendance to be open minded and compassionate during times of conflict.

The Dalai Lama spoke for about an hour before fielding a few questions, his total trip to Colgate only lasted about 2 hours.

I find it rather hypocritical that people stood outside of the fieldhouse screaming about interfering with people's personal freedoms. While the Dalai Lama was teaching, his teachings were being interrupted. Sitting by the door, I could hardly hear him speaking because people screaming were interfering with my own freedom to see the Dalai Lama. Even though there was negative energy outside, the energy from the Dalai Lama made the trip well worth it for me. I was blessed to have the opportunity!

I have met the Dalai Lama, and he is a genuine, compassionate human being. We need more like him in the world. I have also been to Tibet five times, and the Tibetan people venerate this man. Ted Vaill (Colgate '62), Malibu, CA

The report's characterization of the protestors is not entirely accurate. Their message was that the DL should stop persecuting his own monks in the Indian and Tibetan monasteries by forcing them to stop a heart-felt practice they had learned and that he, too, used to practice. They were asking him to stop suppressing religious freedom himself while he's busy asking the Chinese to not suppress Buddhist practice. This was the nature of the "lying" the signs refer to.
