Utica School Board will send $156 million capital project to voters in June

By PAT BAILEY

UTICA - Tuesday night the Utica School Board voted to send "Plan Number 3" to tax payers in June. The plan is a $156 million capital project that would not change the current configuration of how the district is set up.

The plan keeps just the one high school - that of course being Proctor - and keeps two middle schools. However, it calls for the district to add a 10th elementary school, by re-opening a school that has been closed for 13 years.

The capital project calls for Wetmore School in East Utica to be opened back up as that 10th elementary school. Board members expect about 450 kids, from grades K-6, will fill that school if the project is approved.

Right now students in those grades, from the east and the central part of the city, are bused to the elementary schools in North Utica. The other benefit of the capital project proposal is the renovations all the buildings in the district will be getting.

The project will fix the roofs, windows, air conditioning and electrical systems in all the schools within the district.

"So this is a positive step in the right direction in taking care of infrastructure and keeping the configuration the way it is, and also keeping and getting our buildings back to where they need to be," said Chris Salatino, a Utica School Board Member.

Salatino was one of 6 board members who voted for this plan. The one who did not was Lou LaPolla who said he could not support it, because it doesn't fix the one issue he thinks needs to be most addressed, and that is the over crowding at Proctor.

LaPolla was in support of a plan that would have sent the 9th graders back to the middle schools with the 7th and 8th graders.

The $156 million project comes to no cost to the tax payers, because of state funding. The board needs the project to get 60% approval for it to pass. The vote will take place June 24.
