More than 90 charges each for men charged in Herkimer County credit card fraud bust

By MEGAN KOSKOVICH

HERKIMER - It's one of the largest credit card fraud cases Herkimer County authorities have handled.

It started with some suspicious behavior at the Wal-Mart in Herkimer, and ended with the arrest of two men, and possibly more. Jerry Prime and Quincy Thompson are facing more than 90 counts each of possession of a forged instrument.

Police say they are connected to a bigger credit card fraud ring that crosses state lines. But little did they know that when they crossed into Herkimer County - the jig would be up.

What started as a few debit cards in a car turned into almost 100 stolen identities.

"Originally, we found a few credit cards and the more we looked into it the bigger it got," said Captain Scott Scherer of the Herkimer Police Department.

Police say Jerry Prime and Quincy Thompson of Brooklyn used skimmers to place stolen information on blank debit and credit cards. They would buy Wal-Mart giftcards, and then police say the two would go shopping at the retail giant, spending thousands of dollars each time.

"And once they gather that information, they would take the merchandise and sell it online for 100% profit," said Herkimer County Investigator Robert Risi.

"These guys have the ability to make 30-40 thousand dollars in a weekend," Captain Scherer said.

It's a scheme Wal-Mart officials say has been going on for at least seven months, and could have gone on for a lot longer.

"If Wal-Mart wouldn't have called, when they were going through their store using different cards, we probably wouldn't have caught these people," Captain Scherer said.

Now the difficult part comes - the waiting game.

Herkimer investigators say they only have one credit card victim who has come forward. But they need to wait for the other 90 or so people to contact them before they can move ahead with this case.

You know what, people are going to come up with different credit card schemes every day. What's the use? They should be focused on more that credit cards, how about people murdering people, ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS, KATRINA VICTIMS, and other things that are way more important than worrying about people using credit cards. just another way to take my tax money to use and put 2 people in jail. If those 90 people hasn't came forth within the time frame they were doing the crime, they are not coming.

As a victim of identity theft, I did not even know it was going on until my new job did a backround check to find that another woman past Onieda was using my SS# and had a crazy amount of credit cards & other things in my name...It was going on for months before I even knew...Do you think these 90 people may be in the same boat?

Why do the police have to wait for the victims to contact them? Don't they have the cards? Can't they contact people saying they have their cards?

How would that Herkimer resident feel if they were using their credit card. Cheers to the person responsible for turning these people in-do they get any sort of reward for catching these people. If more of these people would be caught maybe it wouldn't cost the rest of us so much when we are shopping. Way to go Walmart security team.

They should do hard time. People like this are costing consumers billions each year. There should be more of a deterrent.
