Rising fuel costs add to extra charges from moving companies

With the price of diesel fuel rising $1.36 in the last year according to federal statistics, some companies have begun charging customers extra to off-set prices.

Despite the added revenue, some are saying the overall costs are having a profound impact on the local industry. Moving companies we spoke with in Rome and are saying business has dropped as diesel fuel increases in price, which now stands at about $4.48 per gallon.

It's a big deal for movers who are entering the traditonally busy summer months. Woodrow Gullerat owns a moving company in Rome and says prices have been so high, he's now putting a surcharge orders.

Gullerat's business uses three trucks to deliver goods around the state, but has been forced to consider staying closer to Rome for deliveries.

Despite having a client base that's been built up for 20 years, customers are not happy with estimates of late.

"You hear complaints from everybody," Gullerat said. "I think it's that mindset that the prices are high and people are trying to save money everywhere and are cutting back."

He is hopeful that business will improve in the coming months, but doesn't expect to see relief at the pump anytime soon.

And movers are not alone. Trucking companies and tow trucks are also feeling the burden of skyrocketing fuel costs.
