Pay with cash, save at the pump

Wednesday, state senators proposed riding the state sales tax on gasoline, immediately saving the consumer 32 cents a gallon. Despite that, gas stations in the area are trying to help out consumers by offering other discounts.

The SaveOn gas stations, around Oneida and Madison Counties, are following what other major chain stations are trying to do to help drivers. The promotion is paying with cash and receiving cheaper gas. But by doing so, you're not only getting more gas for your money, but your avoiding another "hidden" fee.

According to the manager of business operations for the Oneida Indian Nation, every time a customer pays with a credit card, the station gets whacked with a fee.

So why do you care?

Well if you don't use your card and instead pay cash, the gas station can sell gas at a cheaper rate. For example, the save on gas stations are offering 7 cents off a gallon of gas if you pay cash.

Officials there say they are saving on those credit card fees, and returning the favor to you.

"It's going extremely well for us," said Kevin Connelly, manager of business operations. "It's probably one of the most positive things we have done in a long time. Customers seem to enjoy it, and like I said, we looked at it originally as a temporary promotion. I'm hoping we can expand it and enhance it as time goes on."

On the other hand, the Indian Nation does not pay New York State taxes. So why is their gas still as high as everyone else's?

Connelly says they actually pay more for their gas because they are a smaller chain of 11, as opposed to the other major chains that get a discount rate for buying more at one time.

There is at least one other major gas station chain in the area that is offering the pay with cash and receive cheaper gas promotion, and they are the Fastracs.
