Suspended HCCC professor wants immediate hearing regarding future of her job

By PAT BAILEY

HERKIMER - Dr. Janet Evelyn-Dorsey received a letter from college President Dr. Ronald Williams this past February, stating she was suspended with pay.

More than two months after the suspension, Evelyn-Dorsey says she still doesn't know why she was suspended, and has yet to hear if she still has a job.

After a Freedom of Information Law, or FOIL request, NEWSChannel 2 obtained that letter. In it, Dr. Williams states that Dr. Janet Evelyn-Dorsey is suspended regarding past and possible future interactions with a person whose name is blacked out.

The letter says her "staff" will be notified she is on vacation and the suspension will last until a hearing is conducted.

After two months of silence and wondering, Dr. Evelyn-Dorsey says she is going public, saying there has yet to be a hearing. Evelyn-Dorsey says the initial hearing was scheduled for March 14. However, it was postponed.

She says she has not heard back yet about another scheduled hearing, and her lawyer, David Goldbas, says he has been informed that the suspension was due to two or three incidents that center around comments made by Evelyn-Dorsey.

One of those comments came during a meeting with her peers on campus where she used the phrase "drop dead."

Goldbas says the other comment came at a social gathering off campus where she allegedly used an expletive, but would not elaborate.

Evelyn-Dorsey says she is looking for a resolution.

"My goal at this point is to call upon the board of trustees at Herkimer County Community College, and the administration, to schedule my hearing immediately," she said. "I need to move on with my life and my career."

Evelyn-Dorsey's lawyer says she was asked on two occasions after her suspension to represent the college at SUNY events throughout the state.

We did contact HCCC. Officials there issued a very brief statement, saying:

"This is an internal administrative matter that the college cannot comment on at this time."

I'm not suprised by this. I had to deal with her just once during my time their. The way she treated the staff and students around her was appauling. She treated others as if they were bothering her by asking her to do her job.

I was a student a HCCC till my graduation in 2003. Prof. Dorsey was always listening to me when I had problems with courses. She was very polite. Things can happen, teachers can do mistakes and teachers at HCCC do mistakes. Why is the reason just with her was used such over powers against her!!!! I think DISCRIMINATION!!!! I heard, Mr. Williams thinks he owns HCCC and uses over power. I think it is the time for him to retire as soon as possible.

I have dealt with Dr. Janet Evelyn-Dorsey on multiple occasions. She is a proud, intelligent, and assertive woman. Most individuals have difficulty dealing with people who have those qualities, they take it personally. Apparently strength of character has somehow been misinterpreted and has led to her suspension.....which in my opinion, is wrong. Perhaps, if more people in leadership positions at the college possessed her qualities, there would be considerably fewer problems.

I REALLY hope this doesn't turn into a racial thing, I have a very strong feeling that it will. I've known several people who have had her as an instuctor and none of them had anything good to say about her. The word "metally unbalanced" came to mind.

Doesn't she have a union which outlines timeframes? Give the woman a hearing! Is she tenured? Being suspended for "past and POSSIBLE future interactions" with an undisclosed person is a bit severe. Usually there is a process of discipline before a suspension occurs. I hope HCCC has its facts and evidence lined up as impulsive administrative actions can and do become very costly in many different ways!

There are clearly major issues at HCCC. This being just the tip of the iceberg. It doesn't appear that her students have been provided much support since these actions were taken. Also, if Dr. E-D was so bad, and such a threat, why would the college give approval for her to attend two national conferences after her suspension? Lastly, who is approving the waste of money and resources by giving the president 17 weeks time off, and her 9 weeks? The Board of Trustees should be held accountable.

I have had this professor as an instructor and as an advisor, and I will say that I was not impressed. She was rude, and got upset when students asked questions. Glad to see the witch got what she deserved. HCCC is way better off without her!!!

Once she brought a lawyer into the picture, that was the end of the possibility of a hearing. Now it's in the hands of the courts, and it has nothing to do with race but rather impulse control difficulties.

Unfortunately, the fear of lawsuits causes businesses, organizations, etc. to refuse comments. HCCC should have fired her years ago. Her playing the "racial" card is outrageous. Evelyn-Dorsey is unprofessional, has a serious problem controlling her anger and doesn't hesitate to use profanity and screaming when dealing with people. There have been many complaints against her.

The college is suppose to be teaching the students values, including trust and honesty. Students that get in trouble on campus get punished severely, as long as they don't belong to a athletic team. Then it's okay and no comments are ever made!

I have known Dr. Evelyn-Dorsey for several years, first as a friend and then as a mentor when I went back to school as an adult. She has always been considerate and professional, encouraging me in my studies. I think it is outrageous for her to be subject to this treatment. Before I even became a student at HCCC I knew her to be very supportive of the college and all that it stands for. I actually thought she would be a great choice for a new President of HCCC.

Anytime the college doesn't want the public to know about certain sensitive matters, it trots out "this is an internal...matter that the college cannot comment on at this time." And then they never comment on it until forced to do so. That seems to include all issues relating to students, faculty, administrators, classes, etc. What can they tell us about? The weather?
