Aunt backed over six-year old Verona boy

VERONA - Oneida County Sheriff's Office Investigator's are releasing additional and updated information concerning the Fatal Motor Vehicle Accident that occurred last evening on a farm located on Green Road in the Town of Verona, that tragically claimed the life of a six year old little boy.

According to Lt. Brian W. Pfendler, the little boy who tragically died in the accident has been identified as John J. Stanley, age 6, of 246 Williams Street in the City of Oneida. According to Lt. Pfendler, John was backed over in the driveway of the farm by a 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix car being driven by his Aunt, Carrie L. Curtis, age 25, of N. Main Street Canastota. The car was occupied by Curtis, her sister Amanda S. Curtis ( John's mother ), age 23, of 246 Williams Street City of Oneida, and two small children who were in the back seat of the vehicle.

Lt. Pfendler stated that John was last seen by Carrie and Amanda playing on a sand pile located in front of one of the barns. Prior to entering the vehicle, Carrie and Amanda told John to stay on the sand pile and not move from there. Carrie and Amanda entered the vehicle with Carrie driving and Amanda sitting in the front passenger's seat. While backing up, Carrie and Amanda felt the car run over something. Carrie and Amanda exited the vehicle and found John trapped underneath the vehicle.

Carrie and Amanda summoned help from a farm hand who was out in the field spreading manure. The farm hand rushed to the scene and used a bob cat type vehicle to lift the car off of John. CPR was immediately administered to John and continued until emergency personnel arrived on the scene. John was later transported by ambulance to Rome City Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The accident is still under investigation by Sheriff's Deputies and Investigator's. Lt. Pfendler stated that there are no criminal charges being pursued in the investigation.
