Man facing trial again for wife's murder
NORWICH (AP) - An upstate New York man whose conviction for killing his wife was overturned on appeal will go on trial for a second time beginning next week. Judge Martin Smith on Monday rejected a public defender's request for an adjournment in the retrial. So jury selection will begin next Monday in Chenango County Court in the second-degree murder trial of 39-year-old Peter Wlasiuk. Wlasiuk was convicted in 2003 of killing his wife, Patricia, and staging it to look like a traffic accident. He was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison but the conviction was overturned in 2006. Wlasiuk initially told police his wife had swerved to avoid a deer and crashed into Guilford Lake, 65 miles southeast of Syracuse. Later, he told authorities she intentionally drove into the lake. --- Information from: The Norwich Evening Sun, www.evesun.com (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) A new trial is necessary. If new evidence has been found...or the previous error which freed him is corrected, and the man is in fact guilty,he deserves to be punished for his crime. If he is not guilty,a new trial should clear him.
