State Police target aggressive driving

By KRISTEN COPELAND

NEW HARTFORD - State Police define an aggressive driver as selfish, bold or pushy. If you fall under any of those titles - you should know, law enforcement is on the lookout this year.

On Wednesday, a number of police agencies along with the Oneida County District Attorney's office and the State Department of Transportation kicked off an initiative against aggressive driving.

According to police, Route 5 and Route 5A in Oneida County are targeted as high risk zones for deadly car crashes. A half a million dollar grant from the state will keep extra patrols on the road starting tonight.

"It's a concentrated effort with all these different departments," said Captain Francis Coots with the New York State Police. "And what it does...it doesn't detract from other patrols out there. This is an overtime detail. We wont be out everyday like this, but we will be out everyday doing the enforcement efforts."

Police say the most common aggressive driving behaviors include excessive speed, tailgating, and driving while impaired, among other factors.

How many bank/convenient store robberies have there been in the last year? How many shootings in the East Utica area and these guys are checking registration stickers?

If they want to bust some of these obnoxious agressive drivers, all they need to do is follow our elected and appointed city officials up and down the Parkway.
