NEADS says loud noise could have been a sonic boom
We've had lots of phone calls into the newsroom today about a loud booming sound this afternoon. Some viewers even felt their homes shaking. NEADS officials say there was plenty of air traffic today, and the sound could have been a sonic boom. But that is not confirmed. Sunday, May 11 at 7:02 AM Isabelle wrote ...Pt. 2-We did have a small (magnitude 2.0) earthquake in northern Virginia this past week, and people do typically hear booms when the pressure waves generated by the earthquake couple with the atmosphere (sound waves being a type of pressure wave as well). We received nearly 700 Did You Feel It reports for that quake (http://pasadena.wr.usgs.gov/shake/ne/STORE/X1022071_08/ciim_display.html). If you feel that this could have been an earthquake, then report it to their sit for investigation. Flag for moderationSunday, May 11 at 7:00 AM Isabelle wrote ...Here's a partial e-mail received from Mr. Applegate at the USGS in Virginia:Because our monitoring networks are more sparse in the less seismically active eastern US, we do not pick up small events as well as we do in the west, where networks of seismic stations are more dense, but our analysts can usually go back through the data and find the event -- whether an earthquake, a quarry blast, or other type of signal. Flag for moderationSaturday, May 10 at 10:16 AM rp wrote ...I would think being located so close to nuclear power plants in Oswego that a greater effort would be made to find the source of this "boom" than what has been done by the media. It wasn't a sesmic event as that can be easily identified and would have been reported as such. The Rome Daily reported that the Boys From Syracuse did not have any jets in the air at that time either. So what caused it? Flag for moderationFriday, May 9 at 3:12 PM Isabelle wrote ...This is what is quoted from a news article from the Fairfax Times: Fairfax County Police received reports from multiple callers reporting an audible “boom” sound, followed by roughly four seconds of the earth rumbling. There are no reports of damage to property or injuries related to the incident at this time. Regarding the loud boom, “That does happen sometimes,” said Don Blakeman, a seismologist with the USGS. “An earthquake sometimes can be heard, the closer to the epicenter you are.” Flag for moderationFriday, May 9 at 3:08 PM Me wrote ...Rock on-I agree...I googled this the other day and on May 6, 2008 somewhere in Virginia they had the same experience. They thought it was an earthquake-you can view the news report @ www.Fairfaxtimes.com. I thought that it too could be an earthquake. I woke up that morning and the windows were rattling at around 4:30 a.m. I went to the USGS website but there weren't any earthquakes listed for New York. Your theory may be right?? Anyone else with a suggestion? Flag for moderationFriday, May 9 at 11:25 AM Rock On wrote ...I've read all, and I do mean ALL of the comments on this terrific BOOM and no has mentioned if it could have been a seismic event, with one layer of rock slipping off another layer along a fault line deep down inside the earth? Just a thought. Flag for moderationFriday, May 9 at 7:08 AM Thanks CAPT!! wrote ...For the knowledge instead of all this speculation. That makes perfect sense. It shook my house, scared the kids and me! For those talking about 'that plane' overhead... Griffiss does practices or whatever they do and planes fly over my house(on a hill) all the time (VERY CLOSE) I can almost read the print on the bottom of the plane. Sure it's loud & kinda cool, but not like the other day. Sonic boom comes AFTER the plane has gone by... NOT BEFORE. I'm no expert, but even I know that much! I honestly do not believe it was a sonic boom from a jet. I have been to an air show where they presented to us a stealth fighter. Here's an e-mail I received from Mr. Applegate USGS regarding possible earthquake: I heard back from our folks at the National Earthquake Information Center who reviewed the seismic records from stations in your area (they are part of a regional network operated by Columbia University), and there is no indication of any earthquake activity. It is indeed most likely that people heard and felt a sonic boom. Regards, Dave Applegate
