Continuing Story: Gas tax bill debate

Pat Bailey

The New York State Senate has passed legislation to suspend the state's gasoline tax for the summer, immediately saving drivers 32 cents. But there's opposition from the assembly and from Governor David Paterson.

That opposition is a result of a potential 500 million dollar hole that would end up in the state budget, if the gas tax is passed by both houses and the governor. Also, assembly members are reminding senators that there is no guarantee oil companies will lower their costs.

State senators passed the gas tax relief bill Wednesday, but not without a lengthy debate from within their own house.

Senator Joe Griffo was one of the 46 who voted in favor of the gas tax cut. He says the root of the problem lies on the federal level however this tax cut represents an immediate relief.

The hold up is going to be in the assembly, however not everyone there is opposed to the gas tax cut.

Assemblyman David Townsend says politics are playing a factor.

Assemblywoman Roann Destito is one of those democrats who can't support the cut unless answers as to where the 500 million dollar shortfall will be made up. In case your wondering that gas tax goes to fund roads and bridges in New York State.

Assemblywoman Roann Destito says because of that tax most local projects can be done, including the state pitching in a portion of the reconstruction of the north - south arterial.

State Senator Griffo says those funds won't be hurt in the future, and the state can even redirect some resources to help make up for the losses.

some of us live where we need the SUV's. i don't like the MPG in my SUV but I do like the safer feeling I get in the winter. my driving habits have changed also. why not take some of the frivilous money spent by our government and use that to cover the cost of the gas tax.

This will die in the Assembly. And at least someone's blaming the single people for once, instead of the old codgers who blame the young people for everything.

Oh, it makes for good soundbites, our elected misleaders making it look like they are doing something. JB is right, we would pay for it on the backend later somehow. Its already been stated by countless economists that it won't work. Here's what happens. They drop the gas tax and the prices drop. If demand suddenly goes up because of the lowered price, it drives the price back up again. Instead of paying to the Gov't in the form of gas taxes, you end up paying out the nose to Oil Co's.

if taxes are dropped on gas for the summer home owners will have to eventually make up the difference. let everyone share in the pain, besides if the state drops the taxes big oil will still raise prices and pocket more money

I agree with JB. You constantly see single people cruising around in these gas guzzlin SUV's when they are not needed. They live in cities where 4 wheel drive is not needed or they do not have large families. So yes the demand will be up.

It will never happen. You talk about money cuts coming into the state, and they will turn it down. So much for wishful thinking.

Unfortuately as consumers, we have greatly created this challenge. No doubt, the gas price has created hardship for many, caused drive-offs at the pump, etc. According to groups like AAA, consumers are not changing their driving habits, road trips are still on schedule, and the prevalence of gas-guzzling Hummers and other SUV's of the like are common sights on are highway. If the gas tax is suspended, the shortfall will be made up elsewhere and still hit the taxpayer. Is sort of a S/D issue.
