Marching for peace

By EVAN WHITE

CLINTON - The New York State Marches for Peace is underway in several cities and communities across the state, including here locally.

Early Thursday morning walkers left Clinton for the Utica leg of the March. Peace symbols, t-shirts, and signs were visible at the Clinton Green Thursday morning.

Members of the community and activist groups took part in a morning rally, before embarking on a trip up college road toward Fort Drum. Organizers say they support troops, but want to see the war end.

"By going through some of the communities, talking with locals, hearing their stories we hope to communicate with each other, find common ground and put and end to this war," said Jim Fulmer

The march is expected to last until May 17, though several of those who started Thursday morning, broke off from the crowd after walking a couple of blocks.

The state-wide march is expected to wrap up May 17 for "Armed Forces Day."

A community festival is scheduled for that day with other groups against the war in Iraq.
