Another incident on HCCC campus has campus reassuring safety

By PAT BAILEY

HERKIMER - New details surrounding a fight on the Herkimer County Community College. The fight took place two weeks ago, outside a Campus Meadows apartment at the college, leaving two people injured.

At least six people were involved, including three lacrosse players, who witnessed the fight, and eventually the lacrosse coach, who tried to help out his players after the fight.

Three HCCC students were arrested following that fight on April 25. Two of them were charged with posses ion of a weapon - that weapon being a lacrosse stick.

Now, college officials are trying to dispel rumors and myths about what exactly happened that night.

The three men charged in the fight are:

*Basil Chambers, 18

*Brian Johnson, 21

Both Chambers and Johnson are the two charged with posses ion of weapon. Also charged is David Altman, 20.

All three of these students are from Brooklyn, and have been bailed out of the Herkimer County Correctional Facility.

According to Dr. Matthew Hawes, the Dean of Students at the college, a group of students was playing lacrosse outside Campus Meadows, when three other students allegedly confronted the group, and a fight broke out.

Hawes adds that Campus Safety Officials immediately began an investigation into the incident, and after witness statements were taken, the trio was then arrested and charged.

Also according to Hawes, HCCC Lacrosse Coach Rich Dommer offered five people - the two victims and the three witnesses - a hotel room off campus to "calm the environment."

Hawes says Dommer was fearful there may be retaliation.

This is not the first incident of its kind on the campus of HCCC this year.

Dr. Hawes did offer this statement:

"We are always concerned of the public's perception. We believe those are isolated incidents. Other institutions face the same challenges of violence on campus. We treat campus safety with the highest concern, and campus safety will continue to be the highest priority."

Hawes says proof that Campus Safety is a major priority, this summer the housing corporation will be installing $200,000 worth of security camera equipment on all the housing units at the college.

I love how HCCC officials say this incident was an isolated incident, like the others. The things they neglect to report are the problems on campus a couple times a week. And although I'm sure there are incidents on other area campuses, they are not as severe as those at HCCC. Something needs to be done, these are serious matters that have been going on for years, just are being brough into the lime light recently though.

Things like this give the college a bad name. However people need to relize that at a school with 3000 students some things are bound to happen. Their is no way to stop that unless you can get a security guard watching every single student. However tax money is needed for that. I just wish that with a bad misfortune like this people would relize that the school can only do so much and the college should not have a bad reputation for it.

HCCC has a history of covering up for the lacross team. It's funny how they have tricked the Herkimer community over the years as to what the real problem is, the lacross team. I can't tell you the amount of fights and property that was destroyed the lacross team. Guess people will continue to be fooled about the real problem at HCCC.

2002 HCCC Grad. I was able to be there a year the College didnt own the Meadows and then the following year when the College bought it. Being able to be punished by the college was a big deterent for the students that could misbehave the year before. And, are we sure that these Brooklyn boys started it? When i was there, the laccross team was very aggressive and constantly damaging college property as well as started fights with other HCCC sport teams(baseball). Cover up??

I am really frustrated that people in college can't act like adults. Grow up! This ruins how people see the college safety and honestly I get very uneasy because I've seen first hand how the students that cause issues get treated. I don't think the college takes these incidents seriosly!! The faculty need to think of the students that want to go to college to learn. All these fights should have been left in grade school.college is where you learn intellegence, not ignorance.Grow up or get out!

HCCC needs to spend a bit of money, and intensify it's security. The student housing they run is a constant source of trouble. Perhaps Village Police can begin patrolling the area more. They're already out and about and do a very good job at keeping us safe. Something needs to be done before this spills into the village and gives those who live here year round problems. HCCC is looked upon with great pride in Herkimer, it's a shame security issues are ruining it's reputation as a great school.

Water and cameras and as I stated last winter, cameras should be on 24 hours and being monitored from the station of college security. It is necessary a truck like fire department has, but the one used for riots. Ans Water over these students. Believe me the riot will be over immediately.
