Troopers: teen tries to poison stepdad, younger brother
HERKIMER (AP) - State police say they have arrested a 14-year-old boy and are charging him with trying to murder his stepfather and his 11-year-old step brother by poisoning them with antifreeze. State police are not identifying the teen, who is charged with two counts of second-degree attempted murder as a juvenile offender. After his arraignment Thursday in Herkimer Village Court, the boy was sent to the Hillbrook Juvenile Detention Center in Syracuse. Investigators say the youth spiked a gallon jug of milk with antifreeze on April 22. The stepfather drank a small sip of the milk but stopped after noticing it did not taste right. He later sought medical attention but suffered no ill effects. The younger brother did not drink any of the laced milk. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) I am not saying that he was necessarily provoked, but let's face it: kids from well-adjusted backgrounds don't usually just wake up one day and say to themselves, "Gee, Self--this looks like a nice day to poison my family!"...I'm sure there were issues brewing beneath the surface that maybe nobody knew about or talked about. Thank heavens that nobody got hurt, and now let's recognize that boy's cry for help. Family values, structure....it's shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that many kids are "messed up". As stated by another in this comment section, who knows what goes on behind closed doors. It's not uncomman at all anymore to see children in a home, each having a different last naem. What does that tell you?!! Parenting classes, do ya think! i unfortunately have little sympathy for the culprit here. a 14 year should know better. regardless, ignorance is not bliss when it comes to the law. it is fortunate that no one was killed and this child's mental problems are recognized before it is too late
