With rising fuel and food costs, school lunch prices expected to increase

By PAT BAILEY

UTICA - Proof that the economy is hurting everyone, the Utica School District, along with most districts in the Mohawk Valley, will have to increase the price of a school lunch next fall by 25 cents.

Starting July 1, the annual bid price for three major necessities to feed the 7,500 students in the Utica School District, will increase nearly $40,000.

"We're going to have an increase of $28,000 for all of our milk products, and an $8,000 increase for all of our bread products," said Karen Pulice, Food Service Supervisor.

Add another $3,000 for trays that are a petroleum-based product, and the school district will have to budget an extra $39,000 next year.

The good news is those fees are guaranteed not to increase again. However, other foods can increase over night.

"Produce, grocery supplies, those things change month to month based on what the current market price is," Pulice said.

Not only is the price of food going up, but of course the price of gas continues to rise. Because of that, school officials say for the first time that they are paying a gas fee to the company who delivers the food to the district.

"Each vendor is different," Pulice said. "One vendor can charge you $14 gas surcharge another vendor can charge you a $5 gas surcharge. it just depends on the vendor, how far they have to go, where they come from, if they are local, if they come from Syracuse. that's at their discretion."

Schools officials say the 15 cent increase for breakfast, and the 25 cents increase for lunch is not going in the pockets of the school district. Instead, the money will help level out the added costs they will see next year.

the state has no problems feeding inmates, yet they can't find money to feed our kids healthy meals. stop wasting tax payer dollars and put your money were your mouth is.

The school where I work will not let a kid take trays out of the cafeteria if they need to eat their lunch elsewhere - they charge kids 25 cents for a piece of aluminum foil to wrap it in! The kids are being nickeled and dimed every day.

I used to work at a local school in the lunch room. You can't believe the amount of wasted food they throw away. Not to mention the amount of food that goes home with the workers.Maybe if the waste cut back so would the prices of the lunches.

As a middle school teacher, I am relieved to hear that most people seem to agree that cell phones don't belong in schools. After school for a ride home sounds fine, but anyone who knows a 13 year old will agree that there is no way that phone is staying in the backpack and off during the school day. It just doesn't happen. If parents are so worried that they can't call the school if there is an emergency and trust that the school will get their child to a phone, they had better home school them.

I work at a school, and I cannot believe the number of families who do not take advantage of the free or reduced lunches. Kids from these families are not singled out in any way - almost every kid going through the lunch line has prepaid anyway, so it isn’t as if the other kids can see that they don’t pay with cash – hardly ANY of them pay with cash. Their lunches are all scanned into the system, and in this way no one is embarrassed. The best part is it also helps the school and cuts taxes!

Why would children suffer if they have to bring a lunch instead of buying it? And OH MY - eating breakfast at HOME??? Unheard of. Where do you find lunch anywhere for under $2.00? If it is such a hardship, maybe you should take away their CELLPHONES - then you can afford to buy them lunch?

I already pay $1.75 for lunches in Herkimer County. I consider myself low income, but I am not eligible for reduced rates. I am not eligible for any help and am ready to crumble. I can not squeeze out any more from what little I make. I will sacrifice for my child, but what about me, the working single mom? If I work two jobs, what about my child having a parent to raise him?

Let me say it again...the stimulus check is only to stimulate the economy that President Bush has made a mess of, not make it comfortable for us during this recession and financial struggle. We are all going to suffer the downfalls of our President. My children will be bagging their lunches and eating breakfast at home the next school year. I spend $30 a week on them now. To add another $10 a week is $40 a week and more than $160 a month! That hurts!! The children suffer!!

This won't affect the low income families because their lunches will still be free or reduced. This will affect the middle income families the most. We're getting hit from all sides. Will there be any relief? That stimulus check can only go so far!
