A recent Center for Disease Control study found that 1 in 150 eight year olds has an autism spectrum disorder. Some are concerned that early childhood vaccinations may contribute to developmental disabilities.
Monday, the Arc Oneida-Lewis Chapter announced plans to attend a Washington D.C. rally for those worried about the affects of toxins in vaccines. The group agrees that vaccines are vital weapons against illnesses, but say there are safer ways to administer them to children, and that new methods should be explored.
Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder are worried that toxins in vaccines contribute to their disabilities. One of those ingredients - thermisil - is a type of mercury, banned in 2001 according to a spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics.
It's still used in some flu shots, though doctors say the dosage is too small to harm children. Parents are concerned that thermisil and other toxins remain in vaccines, a pediatrician says while autism number are rising, there isn't much of a link between the two.
"If they could test some of these children to check and see if they are vulnerable to the damage of the vaccines, that's what I would like to see, and the outcome to be," said Gina Bateman, parent of a child with Autism.
"Certainly, in my practice, I have seen a rise the number of autistic children," said Dr. Sanjeev Vasishtha, a pediatrician. "However, all the studies done by the CDC and the guidelines we have got are that there are no causative relationship established for sure."
He went on to say it is important to talk with your child's doctor as the vaccination schedule can be spaced out, but the American Academy of pediatrics recommends that children be given vaccinations according to the schedule.
A battle is being waged in federal court regarding autism and vaccines. More than 5,000 families are claiming that their children acquired ASD's after taking vaccines, according to the Associated Press.
A decision is not expected for several months.
The Arc is inviting local families to join its trip to Washington D.C. that will include a 'Green Our Vaccines Rally.'
Parents of those within the Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Arc officials will travel to Washington on June 4 where they will join speakers at the capitol building grounds, including actors Jim Carey and Jenny McCarthy.
The rally is designed to create a safer vaccine supply and schedule according to the Arc. Parents from all over upstate are being invited to take part in the rally.
The March and Rally takes place from 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on June 4.
The Arc will be providing a bus trip for interested participants. The cost is $75 and includes transportation and t-shirts. The bus will leave from the Riverside Mall (by the Tractor Supply Store and B.J.'s Gas Station) in Utica at 12 a.m. June 4. There will be an additional pick-up stop at the McDonald's in Sidney at 1:20 a.m.
