Grant furnishes several Herkimer County police departments with two-way radios

By JOLEEN FERRIS

HERKIMER - A Homeland Security Grant has allowed the Herkimer County Sheriff's Department to furnish several county police departments with two-way radios.

The Sheriff's Department purchased 24 radios with the nearly $25,000 grant. They're distributing them to county police departments based on department size.

The Herkimer County Sheriff says the two-way radios are extremely important to police officers, because most police work happens away from the patrol vehicle.

The two-way radios cost roughly $600 each.

How does " Get A Clue " know that these radios aren't already programmed. Also the Homeland Security Grant may not be for radio's only. There are other uses for grant money for example firearms, computers, vests almost anything to help a officer do thier job.

hey resident, these radios also have to go and get programmed which is also a hefty cost.

These radios are less than $400 each on State Contract. Holsters are $40, and speaker/mics are $60. That's less than $500 on State Contract. Lots of grant money unaccounted for. No negativity. Merely asking for accountability on the Sheriff's part.

I would assume they were purchased under State Contract. Which means they would of cost the same no matter what company sold them. Why do people always have to make a negative out of a positive. A concerned citizen.

$600 per radio, and they purchased 24 units? Where did the remaining $10,600 go? Also, were all local communications companies given an opportunity to bid these radios? Lots of unanswered questions here.
