As cost of products increase, amount of food stamps dispersed remain the same

By PAT BAILEY

Along with the rising price of gas, consumers have also noticed and increase in the price of milk rice and other grocery items of late.

However as those prices continue to rise those who are on assistance, from the government, are still getting the same amount of food stamps monthly. And in both Herkimer and Oneida Counties, the number of those on assistance has either stayed the same or increased over the past few years.

There are 12,238 households who receive food stamps in Oneida County. In Herkimer County there are a little more than 2,200 house holds.

Unfortunately, whatever the monthly allotment was for those households all of last year, most have not seen an increase this year, despite the rising cost of groceries.

Arline Beaty is the Director of Income Maintenance for Oneida County. She says the amount of food stamp eligibility is based on household income, and monthly expenses.

The federal government then uses a percentage of the federal poverty level to determine monthly allowances.

For example, a single person can only gross $1,107 per month, to receive a maximum $162 a month in food stamps. For a family of four, the maximum gross income is $2,238, meaning they would be eligible to receive a maximum of $542 a month in food stamps.

Beaty says in all her years working with the food stamp program, the largest allowance increase, from year to year, she has ever seen is only $7.

That's why she says she explains to the people who receive food stamps, that they are only supposed to be used as a supplement.

"When you come on food stamps, it is not your monthly food allowance for you house," Beaty said. "It is meant to supplement your food allowance. So, it enables you to buy more nutritious food. And that has always been the goal and purpose of the food stamp program, to supplement food purchasing."

Food stamps can only be used for food. People can not purchase personal hygiene supplies like toothbrushes, toothpastes, or even laundry detergents.

Anyone wishing to apply for food stamps can go to their county building.

However, in Oneida County, starting at the end of this Summer, people can start to sign up electronically and avoid coming into the office.

I completely agree that there are so many people that use the system. I Do also agree that there are a lot of people that need the system. I think for most people that are able to work that the system should be used as a crutch and not a life line. I was thankful enough to have the system there when I was a single mother, working for a small income and I found a career with no college degree and moved on. If I can do it so can many others. It burns my rear that some people get a free ride.

Good for you Mother of 4! I understand that some people need the help, like senior citzens or what not, but it burns me that as I'm driving home from work and I see people sitting on their front porches slugging down beer and smoking their cigs and you know that they don't work and are supported by us the taxpayers...it gets on my nerves real bad! Also the ones that complain that they have to work for minimum wage...well they should have went to college and got their degree and found a good job!

I totaly agree with taxpayer, job mom and 9:47 AM Anonymous. The system makes it to easy for people to sit home and collect and to those who say "there are no jobs" You obviously have not looked if you feel that way. Inorder to collect you should at least have prove you have tried to help yourself. It is funny as you ready threw these comments you can tell when the workers have loged on.

We get FS to help out and they do don't get me wrong! There are people out there who MISUSE FS and those people tick me off because it makes it harder for honest people to get help. But if your an outdoors man why not ask the state to reduce the price of your hunting/fishing liscense if your on FS, or seeds to plant in your garden,a little work for them WILL weed out those who MISUSE the system!!!!!!!!

As a hardworking, middle class, tax paying citizen, I strongly object to any increase in food stamps to accomodate higher food prices. We are all faced with increased prices in food, gas, etc. - and my wages are not going up to accomodate me. I refuse to be ok with those on food stamps seeing relief while I continue to struggle and budget and then on top of it, I have to worry about increased county taxes to cover additional food stamps being handed out? Don't think so.

Don't complain about minimum wage. Minimum wage was not created to support families. Many of us middle class worked hard right from the start to qualify ourselves for the jobs we have. If you missed the boat by not preparing yourself early in life for a job that will support your family, then tough for you. Don't expect us taxpayers,( and I mean real tax not candy bar sales tax), to support you.Benefits should be 6 months and thats it. If it is too expensive to live here, try somewhere else.

Well to all the people who sit home or work minimum hours and collect food stamps or whatever try working 2 jobs like I have to! I have more morals than to sit home and collect off the system! I work 2 jobs and raise my kids, so there is no need for anyone to sit home and not get out and get a job! I see some people can afford a computer and internet access and collect welfare.hmmm I wonder how they afford that! No wonder I have to work 2 jobs to support them with all the taxes I pay!

Don't judge those on the food assisant program. It helped me (a single mom of 2 boys) make it through a tough 2 years of school. I also worked weekends and nights. Those who abuse the system (having more children, recieveing assisant for more than 2yrs) should be limited on what they recieve. It's cheaper for birth control than it is to feed an extra mouth..

As a former recipient of assistance myself, I am thankful that it was there when we were in a crunch. And believe me--even when we did receive food stamps, I did EVERYTHING I could to try to cut costs (coupons, sales, etc). No Porterhouse steak and caviar for us! Now that I have a good job, I am still very careful in how I budget my food money. So...with prices rising and benefits staying the same, people on assistance would do well to learn how to stretch the dollars they do receive.

That's just the way of it. I don't get an increase in salary just because the cost of food and gas rises. We make ends meet with what we have. It's just the way it is.

or a job. We are all falling hard with the price of groceries. My weekly food bill is over $100 a week, and that is not including everything I need to buy. I work and do not qualify for any assistance, so maybe the ones on assistance should try supplementing with a J- O- B!

Good. I realize there are honest people using food stamps who may have fallen on hard times, or are using them as a last resort but the people who live off these things just because they're lazy jeopardize the integrity of the food stamp program and give a bad name to anybody who uses them. There has to be a better way to determine who does and doesn't get them.

You know, there are some people out there that have jobs and have food stamps. Most of the jobs around here are minimum wage. Try supporting a family on that with the cost of housing, gas, and the rising cost of food. Even with both parents working, it is real tight. Before you assume anyone that uses food stamps is a scum bag with no job, think about the economy around here. Then maybe you can get off your high horse.

A women was checking out in front of me with foodstamps or EBA card (which ever) and she was buying lobster and kingcrab legs! Huh, can't remember the last time I was able to afford such palet pleasing luxuries! I feel that those of us who are in the middle income, who work (40 hours per week) get hit the hardest as we don't qualify for assistance and nothing is given to us for free. I'm a single parent, own a home, and send my son to private school. All paid for with well earned money!
