Seized drug money redirected to purchase updated equipment for Yorkville Police
YORKVILLE - The Village of Yorkville Police Department has purchased 11 new state-of-the-art weapons. The purchase was made with funds supplied by the District Attorney's Office through Oneida County District Attorney Scott D. McNamara. The new weapons - Glock model 21 .45 caliber handguns - will replace the older Glock model 23 .40 caliber handguns currently carried by members of the Yorkville Police Department. The total cost for the new handguns, together with matching holsters, magazine cases, and night sights is $5159. The weapons being replaced have a trade-in value of $2800. The funds to purchase the new weapons did not come from tax funds, but came from money seized in forfeitures on drug cases. Rick Szmurlo, speaking on behalf of the Yorkville Police, expressed the gratitude of the Department in receiving the equipment upgrade. "Narcotics trafficking is a destructive and sometimes violent criminal activity and money is the objective of the drug dealer's trade," said Oneida County District Attorney Scott McNamara. "It's gratifying to be able to seize and redirect some of their ill-gotten gains to a purpose that is in the public interest - giving the police the equipment they need to protect the public and themselves and to enforce the law, while simultaneously easing a little of the burden ordinarily borne by taxpayers." And a department becoming better equipped with new weapons to protect not only themselves but the public as well is far from a personal satisfaction issue. You are benifting from these purchases as well. If you post here dont be ignorant!!! Flag for moderationFriday, May 16 at 8:14 AM Brian wrote ...Lee...what do you suggest they do with it? It is good to see drug money being used in the community then being burned. This money helps the local budget and gives the police better weapons than what they had.
