The Hamilton College women's lacrosse team made the most of its first-ever trip to the NCAA Division III Final Four, winning the college's first-ever national team championship by beating defending champion Franklin & Marshall Sunday in Salem, Virginia, 13-6.

Franklin & Marshall was the only team to beat Hamilton this season, coming back to win 14-13 on neutral ground back in March, and the Lady Continentals were more than ready for revenge, taking an 8-2 lead at halftime and holding at least a four-goal lead throughout the second half.

Freshman Sarah Bray led the way with five goals and an assist, fellow freshman Anne Graveley added three goals, and junior leading scorer Kaillie Briscoe had two goals and two assist for Hamilton, which finishes the season 21-1. Franklin & Marshall ends the year 19-2.

While a national team title might seem like a long time coming for a school as old as Hamilton, the college was only allowed to participate in NCAA team tournaments beginning in the 1993-'94 season, when the New England Small College Athletic Conference, of which Hamilton is a charter member, lifted its ban on such tournaments. The conference originally imposed the ban out of a concern for academic performance, and did not want its member schools playing more than two weeks beyond the end of the regular season.
