If school budget voted down, contingency plan would carry a tax increase

By JOLEEN FERRIS

UTICA - It's a tense day for local superintendents as they wait until the evening to see if voters approved the school budgets they've prepared.

Voters in the Utica City School District will be deciding on a $125 million budget, and that behemoth of a figure does not carry a tax increase.

You would think zero tax increase...no reason to vote it down, right?

Not necessarily so - there was no tax increase proposed in the Utica City School budget last year, either, and roughly half - about 40% of voters, still voted it down.

The irony of it is, according to School Superintendent Marilyn Skermont, if the budget is voted down and the district goes to a contingency budget, then there actually could be a tax increase.

Polls are open from Noon - 9 p.m. in the Utica City School District.
