Three recovering after carbon monoxide leak in Schuyler

By KRISTEN COPELAND

SCHUYLER - Three people were recovering in the hospital Tuesday night following a carbon monoxide incident in Schuyler.

It happened on Newport Road almost directly across from the fire department. Crews from the Schuyler Fire Department and Frankfort Center were called to the scene for three adults not feeling well.

It was quickly determined that their furnace was clogged and giving off carbon monoxide.

"We evacuate residents, contact National Grid, close down the roadway to keep any ignition sources away and then try to find the source and shut it down," explained Schuyler Fire Chief Bob Reska.

Newport Road was back open Tuesday night and the house at 111 Newport Road was being ventilated.

No word on the conditions of the patients as of Tuesday night.

It is situations like this that point out the importance of installing carbon monoxide detectors in every building and also having the heating equipment inspected every year by a qualified HVAC contractor! The outcome of this situation could have been much worse!
