Talk of Jail In Schuyler Forces One Business to Threaten to Leave

Sports WKTV

As talks about building Herkimer County's future jail heat up, in the Town of Schuyler, one business owner there starts talking about moving out.

The Corrigan family owns WILCOR Distributors, a supplier of wholesale sporting and recreational goods, a company that employees 48 full time workers and an additional 20 temporary workers. Officials with WILCOR say they moved to the Schuyler business park nearly 4 years ago and have been happy there ever since. However they say they were blind sided with talks of the future jail potentially going behind their building.

Shawn Corrigan, Vice President of WILCOR< says the county is only worried about finding a site for their jail, and not concerned with the future of the businesses already there.

Herkimer County legislator, and member of the public safety committee, Jim Bono says the Corrigan family doesn't understand what the county is trying to do. Bono says by building the jail in the Schuyler business park, they are helping the infrastructure there.

Bono says providing more sewer and water, the site will be shovel ready to any future business hoping to come to Schuyler.

Although it remains the county's most sought after site, the Schuyler business park is not the chosen site. Studies are currently underway, by both the Mohawk Valley Water Authority, and the Department of Environmental Conservation, to see if the site is viable. If it is, the piece of land will be brought before the Public Safety Committee, then if approved, the full legislature will have to vote on it.

Sorry but the Schuyler site isn't 25 miles round trip its about 14. Since I take Rt 5 back and forth to work in Utica everyday I know this. And yes they can afford to transport since they are paying to transport all the way to OCJ, not to mention pay to board out at OCJ.

If it weren't for infrastructure improvements tied to OCJ there wouldn't be half the businesses that are around the old Oneida County Airport. Leave to pretentious jerks like the Corrigan boys to act so indignant and ignorant at the same time. Are they dumb enough to think prisoners will be running around loose?

sorry about wilcor's feelings on the topic.cant say that I wouldnt have the same worries if it were to go into my backyard, change is scary.however, arent people shipped to onieda county jail from herkimer on a continous basis, let Herkimer take care of being able to house its prisoners, not wanting a jail doesnt mean shipping everyone to ocj.wake up to reality our county needs the capacity to house our prisoners.

County Jails house LOCAL inmates, their families are already here, they are your neighbors, friends, and sometimes even relatives. Stop complaining! The jail has to go somewhere! You want to complain about the state jails.... Can you imagine what the economy would be like here without the 2000 plus employees of the 4 state prisons nearby. This whole section of the state would be bankrupt.

County jails DO NOT BRING THE FAMILIES OF THE INMATES WITH THEM. Do some research people. County jails house people sentenced for less than 2 years. State prisons are the ones attracting families. As far as Rome goes, there is no county facility in Rome, so it this topic has nothing to do with Rome. Rome has STATE PRISONS.

Jails seldom bring the riff raff because most of our inmates are here for a short time.We will always get riff raff because SOCIAL SERVICES is in Herkimer. That is what brings in the lowlifes. They have to be close enough to get their free food and housing.Sit in front and watch the people that go in and out.

Have the Rome BOE people come in and take over this project. They'll have a site picked out and breaking ground by the weekend regardless of what anyone thinks. And the more opposition they get from the taxpayers, the more angry and determined they become. They've done a great job in doing that here so we'll lend you Simmons for a while and throw in the old crew considering they have free time now to get things moving in the direction they feel it should go.

The Jail is a business. It is going to bring revenue to the county by boarding in prisoners from other counties. It will generate profit just like any other business in the park.

Lots of businesses around the Oneida County Jail in Oriskany, "Employees afraid of having a jail near them". It's a Jail not a State Park. Besides, maybe like down south, the County might have some of the inmates out picking up trash around the park. Sorry, forget that plan, it involves making them work.

They need to do something soon, the tax payers are currently paying big bucks to keep their prisoners in other counties like Oneida. Herkimer is a very big county, pick a spot out in the country, out of the valley. Maybe they should put it up in old forge right next the million dollar cabins the all the New Jersey'rs own. It will be just like home for them.

replace the old jail across from the court house that is wasting space as a "historical site" with a new jail, built to temporarily house inmates. Then, make the structural corrections to the present jail and rent the space to other communities.
