ORISKANY - A school bus in Oriskany has no wheels, but it does have around 100 legs, as students at the Oriskany Central School District take what's known as the "Walking School Bus" to school on Wednesdays when weather permits.

Instead of a bus driver picking them up, school administrators walk with the students to school. They pick kids up along the way, just like a regular school bus.

But this one gives the kids exercise, fresh air and a leg up on the fight against obesity, all in one shot.

"It's been fantastic," said Michael Deuel, Oriskany School Superintendent. "We have about 45 to 50 children who participate every Wednesday in the morning or in the afternoon, and also parents and community members have also joined in with us."

A grant helped Oriskany Schools map out safe routes for the "Walking School Bus." This Fall, school administrators will explore using the "Walking School Bus" beyond just Wednesdays.
