In the wake of Chief Pylman's resignation, Deputy Chief Benzo to also leave Utica Police Department

By BY JOLEEN FERRIS

UTICA - One day after the Utica Police Chief announces he is stepping down from his post, we have learned that the number two man in the department might not be far behind him.

The Utica City Comptroller has confirmed that on Tuesday his office received papers from the State Employee Retirement System inquiring about unused comp time on behalf of UPD Deputy Chief Pasquale Benzo.

Benzo initiated the inquiry at the state level; now the state comes back to the city to see how much unused time the Deputy Chief has accumulated.

The papers state June 23 as Benzo's retirement date; City Comptroller Michael Cerminaro says that date would have come from Benzo.

The Deputy Chief had no comment on the retirement inquiry.

Benzo will be the third of the UPD's top brass to leave the department in just two months time. Chief C. Allen Pylman will leave the department on Friday, June 1 after being bought out of his contract by the City Of Utica, and another Deputy Chief, Richard Stemmer, retired in late April.
