Brewery Fire: Welding material so hot it ignited materials

UTICA - Fire officials have announced that after an investigation into the fire that broke out at 5 p.m. last Thursday at the F.X. Matt Brewery, they have ruled the fire accidental.

According to Chief Fire Marshal Raymond Beck, firefighters spent about six hours on Friday trying to recreate what happened in a controlled environment.

Firefighters took a piece of a conveyor belt that was near where employees were were welding shortly before the fire, and had a brewery employee take a torch to the material. The plastic material ignited, but there was no visible flame while it continued to burn. Therefore the workers wouldn't have noticed the flame.

Investigators determined that as the employees continued to work, the hot plastic on the conveyor belt caused cardboard materials to catch fire.
