Backyard fireworks gain power and popularity

(AP) - The countdown to the Fourth of July includes a lot of backyard patriots stocking up on their favorite fireworks. And this year's offerings promise to be flashier, louder and more creative than ever.

Harry Chang of Black Cat Fireworks says it's all thanks to an increase in the legal limit on the amount of pyrotechnics being loaded into the consumer fireworks.

Not everyone is greeting these new offerings with open arms.

The National Fire Protection Association advocates a total ban on consumer fireworks. Spokeswoman Lorraine Carlie says her organization considers fireworks to be too risky for the general public's use.

Why is it that we as AMERICANS can't have our own fireworks? I thought we have the right to bear arms and what not? Again, what the heck people!!!! This is NY and WE along with the many other states should be able to throw off our own fireworks. Who knows maybe the will make them legal in NY so that we can reap some of the benefits of selling these items like half of the other states. Just a thought????

More scare stories, despite fireworks harming far far less kids per year than swimming pools and swingsets. Read up! Sheeple! You need to be controlled and fearful. We will protect you !

Mike, they're illegal in NY, but VERY attainable. Cross the border into PA, and there are several fireworks stores, VERY HAPPY to sell their wares to NY residents.
