Increasing gas prices make things difficult for Food Bank

By JOLEEN FERRIS

UTICA - Fill the gas tank, or your stomach. For some families, there simply isn't enough money to do both.

Increasing gas prices are driving up the cost of virtually everything, and the Food Bank can barely keep up. The Utica Community Food Bank saw a 138% increase in the amount of people it served this May, compared to last May.

"We're getting a lot of people who are working," said Kim Strong, executive director. "We're getting a lot of people who just can't afford to pay the bills and eat. They can pay the bills then they call us and say there's nothing left for food."

The Utica Community Food Bank's shelves might be almost bare....but client Magen Letendre's three children aren't any less hungry. Because of ever-rising gas prices, Letendre, whose fourth child is due in September, can only stop at the food bank when her regular path takes her by the agency. The married, working mother doesn't know what she'd do without the food bank.

How can you help?  The food bank is sending out a mass mailing asking central New Yorkers to 'plant a row for hunger' in their gardens, and donate the vegetables or fruits from that row to the agency.

I find the video newscast very interesting. It's great what the food bank does for the community.I love the the part,"I can't afford to get to my minimum wage job." WKTV states, food bank client is having 4th child.Wow!!!!! Some peoples thinking I really don't understand.I have one child, have a decent job and would love to have another child, the problem is unfortunately I can't afford it,therefore I can't have another child. But wait I forgot about the system, got to go and tell my wife.

I have a brilliant idea! The Food Bank should get together with Planned Parenthood and have a "Family Planning Day." It's easier to hand out condoms than trying to keep the shelves at the food bank full.
