NBC's Tim Russert dies

WASHINGTON - Tim Russert, the NBC News Washington Bureau Chief and Moderator of Meet The Press has died at the age of 58. Tim collapsed while working at his office at the NBC News Washington Bureau after suffering a massive heart attack.

Mr. Russert was an integral part of NBC News political coverage. He moderated numerous debates recently with NBC News' Brian Williams. He took over Meet The Press in December of 1991. He also is the anchor of The Tim Russert Show on MSNBC, a staple in weekend news coverage. He was also a Vice President of NBC News and head of its overall Washington, DC operations. On election nights, he was a primary anchor with Tom Brokaw and announced results as they came in. Prior to joining NBC News, Russert served as the Chief of Staff for Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-NY) and also was part of the administration of Gov. Mario Cuomo.

Former NBC anchor and friend of Russert, Tom Brokaw says the death came during a political campaign that "he loved." He called Russert a "beloved colleague" and "one of the premier journalists of our time. This news division will not be the same without his strong, clear voice.”

Tom Brokaw broke into MSNBC programming with the news, later joined by Brian Williams from Afghanistan and Andrea Mitchell from Washington. They reminisced over many election years with thoughts of the current election. Both shared personal stories and experiences with him.

There were special editions of NBC Nightly News and Dateline NBC all airing in memory of Tim Russert.

In 2008, Time Magazine named Russert him one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

I was working from my home when I heard that Tim Russert had died. I could not believe it. For the next two days I could not stop watching MSNBC tributes to his life. He was my son's favorite political journalist. And I always paid attention when Tim Russert was speaking on television. Today, Father's day, my priest's homily was mostly about Tim Russert. He was a good man who will surely be missed.
