2-day event featuring Dalai Lama kicks off at Syracuse University

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Two days of panel discussions and music are under way at Syracuse University, with the Dalai Lama as the star attraction.

The "Common Ground for Peace" event started this morning with a symposium on the Middle East at the Schine Student Center on the Syracuse campus, with a second panel discussion this afternoon. The 77-year-old Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader of Tibet, is the star of the gatherings.

Participating panelists include former CIA director James Woolsey Jr., former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Young and Martin Luther King III.

Tomorrow night's music lineup at the Carrier Dome includes performances by Dave Matthews, Counting Crows, Nas, Cyndi Lauper, Engelbert Humperdinck, Roberta Flack, David Crosby and Nelly Furtado.
