20 years in prison for Utica's only homicide in 2012

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A man was sentenced in Oneida County Court Friday for Utica's only homicide in 2012.

Jamal Gadson admitted shooting Jermaine Stubbs on Lenox Ave in west Utica in July after the two had an argument outside a Varick Street Club.

He took off shortly after but U.S. Marshals caught up with him a few months later in North Carolina. Gadson pleaded guilty to manslaughter back in December. The judge asked Gadson if he had anything to say this morning at his sentencing.

"If I could take it back, I would," replied Gadson.

The judge said he believed Gadson was sincere; Gadson's attorney agrees, and says Gadson never meant for this to happen.

"I think this was shocking to Jamal. I don't think he ever had any design or purpose or intent earlier in that evening or any time during that day to take Mr. Stubbs' life. I think this was fueled by alcohol, possibly some narcotics," says Defense Attorney Leland McCormac.

Gadson will spend the next 20 years in state prison.
