ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - Real heroes in the community got the recognition they deserve Friday morning at the American Red Cross Mohawk Valley Chapter's Real Heroes Breakfast, now named after a fallen law enforcement hero.
The nominations were made in January, followed by the tough process of choosing the recipients. Awards were presented on Friday morning at a ceremony at The Beeches in Rome.
While the name of this year's event has changed, the theme still remains the same.
The directors of the event met and decided to call it the "Kurt B. Wyman Real Heroes Breakfast" from this day forward due to the sacrifice made by the Oneida County Sheriff's Deputy, killed in the line of duty during a standoff in the town of Augusta.
"Our fifth annual event last year fell just a few days after Officer Wyman was killed and it put kind of a somber mood on our event," said Victor Fariello, the Executive Director of the American Red Cross Mohawk Valley Chapter. "We began with a moment of silence in his honor."
This year, the Real Heroes breakfast falls a day after the anniversary of Wyman's death, while next year the breakfast falls on the actual day of the anniversary.
