Residents disturbed by dead calves arranged in pattern
PORT LEYDEN, N.Y. (WKTV) - People in the small village of Port Leyden in Lewis County are wondering who among their community of around 700 could be responsible for a gruesome, open grave in a clearing off of Norton Road.
Around a dozen dead calves lie in the clearing, not randomly scattered, but apparently arranged in some sort of pattern.
"Makes me think that maybe it's a disturbed person, if possible, and I certainly don't want the disease or anything that can come from this to go in to around this area," said a troubled neighbor who asked not to be identified.
That neighbor said that someone held a bonfire in the clearing Monday night, so close to the dead calves that it would be impossible not to know they were there.
At the end of the driveway that leads to the clearing, there's a hand-written sign, advertising firewood for sale. NEWSChannel 2 called the number. The man who answered said the clearing was his property. When asked about the dead calves, he said, "Um, ma'am, I don't know what you want me to say right now how 'bout that?"
The Lewis County Sheriff's Department is aware of the dead animals and is investigating. They declined further comment.
