Fewer flights for Central New Yorkers

By SUSAN CAMPBELL

Oil is now selling for $140 per barrel, and the high prices aren't just hurting consumers at the gas pump.

In the midst of it, airlines are scaling back, and you may have a hard time finding flights.

Fewer flights, more expensive fares, and added charges are taking a toll on airline travelers in Central New York.

"They've gotta pay this money just to get their luggage, and then if you're over... oh my gosh!" laughed Crystal Garretson, a traveler.

"It's a tough situation for everyone right now," said Sean Brady, another traveler.

It's not just an inconvenience for travelers. A local travel agent says finding her clients flights from upstate airports has becoming increasingly difficult.

Bozena Piatek has been helping people make vacation plans for 15 years now. She says this year is by far... the most challenging she's seen in the industry.

"Availability's not good, prices are high," Piatek said. "So we do need to spend more time to find good prices for our clients."

The Commissioner of Syracuse's Hancock International Airport, Anthony Mancuso, agrees. He says fewer flights, and smaller planes mean less freedom for fliers.

"As capacity shrinks, there's less options for people to get on a flight they want," Mancuso said.

Wednesday, American Airlines suspended all service from Albany International Airport. And just Thursday, the airline announced it will be cutting two flights from Syracuse - one to Chicago and one to Dallas.

Now, the fear of more cuts at upstate airports.

The airline industry itself is looking to save everywhere they can, and they're going to look very hard at every station and all their flights to see which are the most profitable, and which ones they want to keep.

As for Bozena Piatek's clients, she says they're still traveling.

"They say 'what can i do? We need to go.'" Piatek said. "We can not just sit home and wait for better times. Who knows if the better times will come?"

If you are vacationing at a destination that you can ship boxes to, it may be cheaper to ship clothes or other goods to that destinantion,by UPS/FEDEX?etc., than to take them in luggage on an airplane that has luggage charges.
