Oneonta woman faces multiple charges after incident during jail visit

COOPERSTOWN - An Oneonta woman is facing multiple charges after an incident at the Otsego County Sheriff's Office Sunday night.

According to Otsego County Sheriff's, Melissa J. Allen, 22, of Oneonta, came to the Sheriff's Office to visit the father of her child in the jail and left their four-month old son unattended in a vehicle in the parking lot for approximately 20 minutes while she was in the Otsego County Jail.

She was arrested for endangering the welfare of a child.

During a search, a crack pipe was found in Allen's pocketbook. For that, she was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance.

A computer check revealed that her driver's license was suspended for failing to answer a summons in the Town of Oneonta Court in 2007. She was also arrested for aggravated unlawful operation.

Allen was arraigned by a Town of Hartwick Judge and remanded to the Otsego County Correctional Facility on $2,000 bail.

The child was turned over to his grandfather Sunday night.
