New Hartford under boil water advisory after water main work

By ANDREW DONOVAN

NEW HARTFORD - The area of Seneca Turnpike is under a boil water advisory. This was put into effect following the the Mohawk Valley Water Authority shutting down service to 200 households.

Crews were working on a water main, on woods highway, when they discovered a cracked valve. The valve was replaced on the spot but residents should still take caution when going to the tap. They are advised to boil their water for the next 48 hours.

According to the Executive Director of the Mohawk Valley Water Authority, Patrick Becher, shutting off the water helped prevent a major problem in the future. He said, "We have over 750 miles of mains in the system. A third of those are 100 years old, others are between 75 and 100 years old so we know there are sections that need to replaced and a variety of maintenance done. We target those areas."

If your water is cloudy, the Water Authority suggest running the cold water until it appears clean. You should also avoid doing laundry until the advisory is lifted.
