Utica Police Department to reform burglary unit

By KRISTEN COPELAND

UTICA - A couple of years ago the Utica Police Department disbanded its burglary unit simply because there wasn't enough manpower to keep it going.  After 800 reported burglaries last year, Public Safety Commissioner and Acting Police Chief Dan LaBella says it's time to bring the unit back.

'It's going to be on the front burner," LaBella said.  "We're going to have it and also it cuts down on the workload of other investigators where now they can concentrate more on the incidents they have."

The City of Utica has seen its fair share of burglaries.  Records show, last year alone 600 of the 800 burglary cases were solved.

Labella says the newly reformed burglary unit at UPD is not just about solving those crimes.  "It's an important unit within our police department because we find when a burglary does occur it's usually several other crimes are interwoven into burglary," LaBella said.

For some 50 years, the UPD had a specific group of investigators working strictly on burglary related crimes.  In 2006, the department disolved the unit due to lack of staffing.

"A specialized unit also comes down to manpower," LaBella said.  "If you can supply the man power needed. we did some structuring of the police department where we are able to obtain the manpower for this unit."

Labella will not disclose how many investigators will make up the unit.  But he says it is a done deal and will form in the coming weeks.

Dan LaBella will make sure the Burglary Task Force will have the convictions it needs to make him look proud - he will continue to plant "evidence" in order to convict innocent people!

I am so sick of people bad mouthing Utica! If you don't like it here, leave. Instead of blaming everyone else for everything that happens, did you ever do anything to help?? Some areas are run down because people don't take care of their property. No one takes responsibility for their actions any more. If you want to get upset, go to your congress people to enforce tougher laws/sentences to these offenders.

I can't wait to leave this god forsaken city - soon to be a town. Let's see how fast the population drops. Rents are high, landlords are becoming slumlords or are gouging tenants for tons of money, job market is well you know that already...communities are falling apart, our children are falling by the wayside, and the city would rather build a new stadium at proctor than fix what is already wrong. come rofero, WAKE UP!!!!

If there are not enough Officers to keep it goung here is a thought........hire more Officers....Utica has turned into a giant dump....only a handful of nice areas left.....800 burglaries????? How many Officers could have been hired for the cost of that neon sign on the parkway??? Come on Mr. Mayor and Police Chief.....step up to the plate and make the tough decisions that Utica needs to prevent it from becoming a giant trash bin!!!!!!!!!!
