Keeping diabetes in check during July 4th picnics

By DAVID DELLECESE

The fourth of July - baseball, hot dogs, apple pie ... and out of control diabetes?

Might sound crazy, but not according to some experts who say that this Fourth of July, millions of American diabetics will have to strike a balance between celebration and dedication to their health.

According to Bob Hawkinson, diabetic and author of the book "The Joy of Diabetes," all the outdoor activities, picnics, and food choices can add up to disaster for a diabetic, if they don't take the proper precautions.

So, here's a few tips the author suggests:

  • Know what you're eating, because there may be hidden things in those family potato salads. It's best to ask if you think there might be sugar in there.
  • Don't be a picker. Use a plate and take a known amount when snacking. It's very tempting to just eat out of a bag or pick off a plate through the day. And when you can't know how much you're eating, it's hard to track what you're ingesting.
  • Check your blood sugar often. With the high chance of extra activity this weekend and the wide variety of foods at family and friends' gatherings, it's easy to misfigure.
  • Stay hydrated. With all the extra activity and summer heat, you'll need a lot more fluids than normal. And make sure you avoid sugary drinks like sweet tea, which is loaded with sugar and carbohydrates.
  • And while alcohol may be a staple of many fourth of July parties, it can be very dangerous to a diabetic. Beer, wine and mixed drinks all have different levels of carbohydrates and effects.

And while staying healthy is always a bit of a challenge for a diabetic, it can be especially difficult during holidays. But, the good news is, as long as you're aware, and doing the right things,it's possible to still stay healthy, *and* enjoy the holiday weekend...and all the food and festivities that go along with it.
